Creative Agencies
Research as a creative advantage

The opportunity
As data and desk research become easier for everyone to access, Polar saw first-hand knowledge as a new source of creative and commercial advantage.
The opportunity was to complement its existing strategy and planning capability with specialist qualitative research: going directly to audiences, customers, and industry figures to uncover the motivations behind the data and give every project its own evidence base.
The partnership
Gatherer works alongside Polar’s strategy and creative teams in two ways.
For new business, we investigate the prospect’s world and find an original, commercially valuable point of view for Polar to take into the conversation.
For live projects, we conduct deeper qualitative studies that establish strategic ideas, guide creative development, and bring the language of the audience directly into the work.
New business, informed by fieldwork
Gatherer has produced research-led Fieldnotes for opportunities across luxury travel, yachting, premium workwear, and powersports.
Each investigation begins with a live commercial question. We map the category, identify the people closest to the subject, and connect patterns across culture, behaviour, competition, and first-hand conversations.
The resulting Fieldnotes give Polar more than just background information, providing the context and insights to shape a distinctive perspective on the prospect’s unique challenges.
Establishing insights as the foundation for creative ideas
On live projects, Gatherer provides the qualitative evidence and tangible insights behind major strategic and creative decisions.
For the development of a new premium sports product, we interviewed elite athletes and influential figures across two sporting worlds. The research tested demand, functionality, features, use cases, and price perception.
The findings shaped the product strategy and market positioning. More unexpectedly, the athletes’ own language became creative material. Quotes from the interviews informed the top-level messaging and helped inspire the central brand idea.
The outputs
The form of the output changes with the research.
Sometimes it is a concise, editorial set of Fieldnotes designed to open a new-business conversation. Sometimes it is a full interactive Reveal containing audience groups, transcripts, commercial findings, and tools for exploring the evidence.
In each case, Polar receives first-hand knowledge that its strategists and creatives can interrogate, interpret, and put to work.
The impact
The partnership has helped Polar bring original audience insight into prospective and live client work across several sectors.
New-business conversations begin with a stronger point of view. Strategic recommendations have proprietary evidence behind them. Creative teams gain real tensions, stories, and language to build from.
It positions Polar as a future-facing agency that understands the growing value of qualitative fieldwork: finding the why behind the data and bringing audience behaviour to life.
